. . . Printable Copies of Tax Bills Online

Have you ever needed a copy of your tax bill? Many property owners do. Sometimes they lose the bill, or never received it because they changed addresses. Sometimes they need a copy to give to their accountant. Whatever the reason, it is available on my office's website. AND... this online tax bill can be e-mailed, too!

This service has been online since October of 2004. During that time the service has been used 15,000 times. That is 15,000 people that obtained the information they needed, when they needed it, not just when we're available.

This service benefits my office, too. We did not have to bear the expense of postage, envelopes, paper and staff-time. This is just one way by reducing redundant tasks, and providing better service, that allowed me to willing decrease staff: Another major money saving success!
. . . Online Property Tax Payment Research

While filling out your state and federal income tax forms, have you ever needed to know how much you paid in property taxes? Or, did you ever need to confirm that your mother actaully paid her property taxes? Many do.

Is there a problem with this? Yes. Generally the payment verification requests occur when my staff is processing April tax payments. Staff must stop processing payments and tend to the research. Incoming tax payment deposits are slowed and investments are delayed.

Both the "need for research" and the "need to process payments" are of equal importance.

Six years of property tax payment history is available on my office's website. Now the property owners access their payment history without interrupting tax processing. A very beneficial result, and money saving success!

. . . Tax Auction Notification System

Preparing for my annual tax auction takes about nine months of work. Most of that work is spent in research in order to send the mandated legal notifications to the property owners and everyone that has a financial interest in the property.

This process begins in mid July. Experienced tax auction bidders need our information as soon as possible. Before revising this system they mailed us a self-addressed, stamped envelope to my office. We used their envelope to send them a listing of the properties. If they wanted updates they were required to send another envelope. Very labor intensive and slow!

There were many phases associated with today's ultimate online system, but now the prospective bidders add their e-mail address to my notification system and within minutes of an update they receive an incoming e-mail about the change. Another very beneficial result, and money saving success!

Legal Responsibilities

As the County Treasurer and the County Tax Collector, two distinct offices, I must uphold, enforce, and defend State laws. The State demands consistency from both of these offices throughout all fifty-eight counties state-wide.

The Treasurer is governed by the State
 •  Civil Codes,
 •  Civil Codes of Prodecures,
 •  Government Codes,
 •  Education Codes, and
 •  Probate Codes.
We are also governed by Federal Regulations such as GASB and FASB. Combined, these laws and regulations establish the accounting, investing and administrative standards for public funds management.

The Tax Collector is governed by the State
 •  Constitution,
 •  Commercial Codes
 •  Corporation Codes,
 •  Education Codes,
 •  Government Codes,
 •  Penal Code,
 •  Public Resource Codes
 •  Public Utility Codes,
 •  Revenue & Taxation Code, and
 •  Streets & Highways Code.
We are also governed by the Federal
 •  Bankruptcy Codes.

There is a lot to know in order to run these two offices. Thank you for allowing me to learn!
